Adopting a child is one of the noblest things to do. Since ages, couples or single moms have adopted kids in a legal and private manner. Even single men can adopt an infant, but it has to be a male. The laws of adoption in each country are different and it is suggested that if you are planning to adopt a kid then better do it in your own country. In recent times international adoptions have also gone on to increase with many eminent personalities adopting children from foreign countries.

In a country like India, a resident, a non resident Indian or for the matter a foreigner can adopt a child. For each of these groups, there are different acts and you need to confer to the guidelines in place. In the case of a single male if you are looking to adopt a child it has to be a registered agency.

The conditions to be fulfilled by the adopting parents?

One of the main conditions for the adopting parents is that they should be medically fit and financially secure to care for their kids. You need to be at least 21 years of age to adopt a child. There is no upper benchmark regarding the age of the parents, but most of the agencies have their own set of protocols in place. For a child less than one-year-old, the combined age of the parents cannot be more than 90 years of age. In the case of an individual parent, it cannot be more than 45.

In the case of older children, the age group can be relaxed accordingly. Say for example, in the case of a one-year-old child it is 46 and when it is two years old it is 47 and the maximum age limit is for a child who is 12 years old and the age of the parent is 55 years.

Indian citizens who are Hindus, Jains or Sikhs can go on to adopt a child under the framework of the Hindu adoption and maintenance act of 1956. Under this law, a couple or a single female is not permitted to adopt a child of the same sex. The basic criteria is that you have to be 18 years of age

Can a parent ask for a specific type of child?

As an adoptive couple, you are never allowed to ask for a child as per your preferences. Say, for example, you can ask for a specific child if it happens to be first in the family based on skin, color or features. But you need to keep in mind that the greater the specifications, the more difficult are to find a child of that pattern. In a way, this is also bound to restrict the pool of children you are looking at for adoption.

Depending upon the adaptive needs of the parents, the kids are analyzed to find a child of their choice. If a child matches the specifications of the parents, then they are shown to them. In case if the parents are not happy with the choice, then two or three more children with the same set of characteristics will be shown.

The entire process of adopting a newborn baby takes a lot of time to complete. Once it is done you are ready to welcome one to your extended family.
